The first giant hybrid rice variety in the pilot rice paddies of a village in Tianjin is expected to ripen in October. The experimental rice variety was sown in late May.

No giant hybrid rice varieties have been grown in North China before, though the planting of similar varieties has been successful in many cities in southern China.

Compared to regular hybrid rice, it has a higher yield, drought tolerance, and better resistance to disease and waterlogging. Giant hybrid rice can grow between 1.8 to 2.2 meters tall.
