Tianjin Vocational College of Mechanics and Electricity is actively integrating intangible cultural heritage (ICH) into its education system. By combining traditional Chinese culture with aesthetic education, international exchange, ideological learning, and community involvement, the college is creating a well-rounded cultural education model.

Dough modeling is among the most sought-after experiences. It is a traditional Chinese folk art that uses colored flour dough to create vivid figures of flowers, birds and people. Faculty member Gao Dechong has brought this craft into the classroom and local communities through extracurricular activities, exhibitions and workshops.
"Chinese culture is amazing," said students from Portugal and Madagascar Luban workshops who are studying in Tianjin.
"We've learned techniques like dough modeling, tie-dye, and mother-of-pearl inlay. Life in Tianjin has been truly enriching."
Since 2022, the college has also promoted digital preservation through its "ICH cloud classroom" project. This online video archive makes traditional crafts accessible to learners anytime and anywhere, further expanding cultural outreach.
ICH has also been introduced as a public elective, drawing about 1,500 students annually. Teachers often take students off-campus to learn directly from ICH inheritors, offering hands-on experiences that build cultural literacy and artistic sensitivity.
In addition, the college appointed Tian Shubao, an officially recognized ICH inheritor in Tianjin, as a guest professor. His involvement supports the integration of vocational and general education, while enhancing ideological learning across schools in Tianjin's Jinnan district.
One student, Zhang Xiaohe, had an ICH-themed artwork selected for the National Security-Themed ICH Exhibition at the Tianjin Art Museum—highlighting the creativity and talent nurtured through the college's cultural programs.
By embedding intangible cultural heritage into everyday learning and international cooperation, the college is nurturing cultural ambassadors and showing how traditional arts can thrive in modern education.
