Tianjin on Oct 11 unveiled a plan to develop itself into an international consumption center city. This decision plays an important role in establishing a new development pattern and embarking on the new journey of building Tianjin into a socialist modern metropolis.

In July, the State Council approved that Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Tianjin and Chongqing will take the lead in developing international consumption center cities.

The plan clarified the main goal and the key tasks of building an international consumption center city. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period(2021-25), Tianjin will cultivate commercial landmarks and focus on the upgrading of the consumer market. It will create a unique and charming business card of Tianjin while enhancing the concentration of international brands.

Efforts will be made to create an international level consumption environment and a convenient consumption system environment, improving consumer satisfaction, accessibility and comfort. The city will also promote interconnected regional development to develop a new pattern of consumption.

The port city will play a more important role in gathering global goods by facilitating exports and imports. It will boost fashion and healthcare businesses, expand cultural, tourism and sports consumption, and hold more sports events.

Relying on the newly built National Exhibition and Convention Center (Tianjin), the city will host more international and influential exhibitions. Digital commerce is also a focus with efforts in facilitating e-commerce and live streaming.

By focusing on key commodities such as automobiles, dairy products, and red wine, it aims to serve as a supply platform for imported consumer goods that covers northern China.

Districts of Tianjin will use their advantages to improve the quality of their commercial areas, increase their influence, and help the city's construction of an international consumption center city.

The city’s central Heping district will leverage Golden Street and Wudadao -- the Five Great Avenues--in attracting consumers and boosting consumption.

Built in 1902, Golden Street has not only witnessed the growth course of Tianjin's commerce, but is the longest business pedestrian street in China with a length of 1.3 kilometers.

The district will invest a hefty 10 billion yuan($1.55 billion) to shape the business pedestrian street into a fashion and social center offering trendy services in business, arts, culture and tourism. In the next five years, more high-end complex and shopping malls will rise in the area.

As for the Wudadao area, an area home to over 2,000 villas in various Western styles built in the 1920s and 1930s, it is expected to welcome more tourists worldwide after further tapping  its rich historical stories and cultural resources.

It has become a hotspot for the headquarters of high-end enterprises, with  nearby flora, developed education and medical resources.
