The ecological construction takes shape with re-planned land use and newly planted trees.

Yan Lei, director of the Hujiayuan street committee, Binhai New Area, tours visitors around their newly-built tree garden. “If you came here two years ago, what you saw were saline white lands, as if they were covered in snow,”Yan said.

But now, a scientifically designed ecological park with Chinese cultural elements and selected trees planted in the improved soil has taken shape. It will open to the public next year so they can enjoy their leisure time with nature and sports such as marathon running and horse-riding.

It is part of a newly established ecological area in the coastal Binhai district.

According to a plan announced by the city, a green band covering 736 square kilometers will be built between the costal district and Tianjin central area.

In addition to Binhai, four districts in the middle -- Dongli, Xiqing, Jinnan and Ninghe -- will be the main focuses.

Xiaozhan Rice, a century-honored rice brand in China, has thrived in Tianjin.

A hefty special fund of 40 billion yuan ($5.76 billion) has been set up by the local government to carry out key projects such as replenishment of water, houses, and land, as well as tree planting and river cleaning.

The construction began two years ago, and in some areas wetlands and green corridors have already begun to develop rich waters and swathes of green and luxuriant forests, with important environmental impact.

The ecological areas are divided into three levels. The level I control area accounts for 61 percent of the total area and includes ecological corridor and rural areas where construction is strictly banned and ecological restoration is emphasized. Places such as urban and industrial parks fall into level II and level III control areas, accounting for 20 percent and 19 percent respectively, where the scale of development is strictly controlled and improving ecosystem quality and increasing green space are placed high on the agenda.

Rice field, lakes, grassland and forest have replaced illegal construction, badly used lands and highly polluted areas.

Based on the ecological plan, next year will see 65 percent of the area covered with water and green plants, and this proportion will increase to 70 percent by 2035.

The restoration not only meets Tianjin’s need for high-quality environmental development, but is also a historical plan meant to benefit the ecology of the neighboring Beijing and Hebei province.
