Updated: 2018-05-14

Located at 117~119 Machang Avenue, Hexi District, Tianjin, the former Beijiang Museum is now in Tianjin Foreign Language University and is the heritage site under city protection and the important protection historic architecture in Tianjin. Now it is used by Tianjin Natural Museum.

Founded by the French priest Emile Licent in 1914, the museum is one of the first museums established in China. The museum was called Beijiang Museum because its collections were mainly geological, flora and fauna articles found along the Yellow River and Haihe River. Covering an area of 2000 square meters, it consists of two parts, the Museum and the laboratory.

The museum part (northern part) was designed and constructed by the Credit Foncier D’Extreme Orient in 1922. The laboratory part (southern part) was constructed by French Yonghe Company between 1925 and 1929. The two parts are connected by an enclosed overpass. The building is a three-storied (part of it is two-storied) mixed structure with fair-faced walls. The facade of the building is simple and natural. The layout meets the required function of the building.
